A palette out of a picture

Drop an image here, or choose one:

It stays in this browser. The picture is read with a FileReader, drawn into a canvas and clustered here; this site has exactly two API routes, a visit counter and a stats read, and neither takes a file.

Why the clustering happens in OKLab

Grouping pixels in RGB groups them by voltage. A mid blue and a dark blue sit far apart in RGB and read as one colour; two greens a person tells apart sit almost on top of each other. Clustering in OKLab groups by what the eye does, which is what you asked for when you dropped the picture.

The swatches are ordered by share of the picture, not by how colourful they are. The most saturated pixel in a photograph of a road is usually a traffic cone.

Same picture, same palette, every time. The clustering is seeded from the image's own pixels rather than from a random number, because a tool that answers differently on the second try reads as broken — and cannot be tested.
